End of Week 3 Update

It has been another busy and positive week for Year 11. As we continue our half-term focus on aspiration and the journey ahead, students have been thinking about the qualities that will help them succeed, hearing about resilience and setbacks, getting out of the classroom for Geography fieldwork and continuing to build strong habits for the year ahead. There is also plenty coming up next week, including our Supporting Success Evening, House assemblies and the return of our intervention programme.

🚀 Monday Tutor Session: Future Ready

Our Monday tutor session this week focused on being Future Ready and, in particular, what colleges, sixth forms, apprenticeship providers and employers look for when making decisions about young people.

Students explored the important message that good GCSE grades matter, but they are only one part of a successful application. Through discussion and different scenarios, students considered the importance of:

⏰ Attendance and punctuality
📋 Reliability and organisation
🌟 A positive attitude and willingness to learn
💬 Responding positively to feedback
💪 Resilience and problem solving
🤝 Independence, communication and teamwork
📈 Showing improvement when things have not gone well

A key message was that students build their reputation every day. Teachers may be asked to provide references for sixth forms, colleges, apprenticeships and other future opportunities, so the choices students make now matter. Turning up, being punctual, completing work, accepting support, responding to feedback and engaging positively all contribute to the picture others build of them.

Students finished by identifying one quality they already have, one they would like to develop during Year 11 and one specific action they can take this week.

🏠 Conversation starter at home: Ask your child, "What quality did you choose to work on this week, and what are you going to do to develop it?"

🌱 Assembly: The Journey Matters

Our assembly this week was led by Miss Ball, Head of School, and linked closely to our half-term focus on aspiration and journey.

Miss Ball gave students a glimpse behind the curtain by talking openly about some of her own experiences of setbacks, resilience and accomplishment. It was a powerful reminder that success rarely happens in a perfectly straight line.

Young people often see somebody's eventual success without seeing the challenges, disappointments, decisions and hard work that came before it. Students responded really positively to hearing about Miss Ball's own journey and the resilience required along the way.

The message to Year 11 was a simple but important one: the journey matters, not just the destination. The challenges students encounter, the way they respond to them and the lessons they learn along the way are all part of becoming successful.

🎓 Supporting Success Evening: Monday

We are really looking forward to welcoming Year 11 parents and carers to our Supporting Success Evening on Monday 28th September, with doors opening at 5.45pm.

Whether this is your first child going through GCSEs or your last, there will be plenty of important information about the year ahead and an opportunity to hear from and meet members of the team supporting your child.

The evening will include:

🗓️ Key information about the Year 11 journey ahead
🎯 How we are preparing students for the November mock examinations
🏠 Practical advice about supporting your child at home
📚 Guidance on effective revision
➗ Short, focused sessions from English, Maths and Science

We would love to see as many families there as possible. Please sign up through Arbor Trips if you have not already done so. As a reminder, there is no parking available on the school site for this event.

🌍 Geography Fieldwork: A Sunny Southampton Success!

Our GCSE Geography field trip to Southampton was a fantastic success this week, with all four Year 11 GCSE classes heading out into some glorious September sunshine.

Armed with Mr McKay's conversation starters, students enjoyed the journey without the usual technology and then embarked on a tour of the city, visiting specially selected locations to gather evidence for the enquiry question: How and why does the quality of the urban environment vary across Southampton?

Students evaluated urban environmental factors, produced field sketches, annotated photographs and mapped different land uses across the city. The enhanced aroma of Southampton on bin Monday also provided an unexpected additional dimension to their environmental observations!

Most importantly, student behaviour was excellent throughout the trip. Students also enjoyed some well-earned downtime at lunchtime in Westquay, with Slim Chickens proving particularly popular. Mr Silverwood's choice of spicy sauce may have been slightly less successful!

For many students, this could be their final school trip during their time at Twynham, and it was brilliant to see them enjoy the experience, spend time together and represent the school so positively.

A huge thank you to Mr Bishop and the Geography team for organising the day.

🏆 House Assemblies Are Back!

Next week sees the return of our whole-school House assemblies, and we are really looking forward to Year 11 being part of them.

There is always something special about bringing students from across the school together under their House banner. It provides an opportunity to celebrate successes, build House identity, recognise individual and collective achievements and enjoy some friendly competition. As the oldest students in the school, it is also a great opportunity for Year 11 to set the tone and lead by example for younger students.

Year 11 should register with their tutor group as normal before attending the hall.
🔵 Monday: Avon
🟢 Wednesday: Hengistbury
🟡 Thursday: Mudeford
🔴 Friday: Southbourne

We are looking forward to seeing the energy, enthusiasm and House spirit that our whole-school assemblies always bring.

🎯 Intervention Returns Next Week

Our Year 11 intervention programme returns next week as we continue building towards the November mock examinations.

Some students will receive new invitations to additional English, Further Maths and NEA sessions, alongside our existing programme of support. These sessions are carefully targeted and provide students with valuable additional time with specialist teachers, whether that is strengthening key knowledge and exam skills or making important progress with coursework.

If your child is invited to a session, please encourage them to see it as an opportunity and make attending consistently a priority. These interventions are purposeful, focused and have the potential to make a real difference.

As always, our aim is not simply to add more work. It is to make sure that students are using their time effectively and receiving the right support, in the right areas, at the right time.

With the mock examination window getting closer, every lesson, intervention and independent study session counts. It has been brilliant to see so many Year 11 students increasingly locking in, working hard and taking responsibility for their own success. Let's keep that momentum going.
