As your child prepares for their November mock exams, we have provided a comprehensive Year 11 Revision Toolkit to help structure their learning and maximise success. This guide outlines how you, as a parent or carer, can support them effectively using the toolkit and proven revision strategies.
Students have been provided a paper copy of this resource and actively using it in tutor sessions and lessons. Students have access to an online copy on the Revision Gateway.
The resource can be found here: Year 11 Revision Booklet - November 2025
Why Structured Revision Matters
Mock exams are a vital checkpoint in Year 11. They help identify strengths and areas for improvement, build exam confidence and prepare students for the real thing in the summer. However, not all revision is equal. Research shows that active recall (retrieving information from memory) is far more effective than passive methods like re-reading or highlighting.
Encouraging your child to revise in a structured, purposeful way can make a significant difference. The toolkit is designed to support this approach.
What’s Inside the Toolkit?
The booklet includes:
- Subject-by-subject breakdowns of exam content
- Revision techniques that work (and those that don’t)
- A colour-coded confidence system (Red, Amber, Green)
- A weekly revision timetable with “Gold” and “Silver” hours
- Links to online resources, videos and practice questions
How You Can Use the Toolkit Together
Here are some practical ways to support your child:
✅ Start with the Confidence Grid
Help your child identify which subjects or topics they feel confident in (Green), unsure about (Amber) or need urgent help with (Red). This helps prioritise their time.
📅 Build a Weekly Timetable
At the start of each week, we encourage you to sit down with your child and use their revision lists to help plan their time effectively. This shared approach can make a real difference in helping them stay organised and confident.
Please consider the following structure when planning:
- Gold Hours - These are protected, non-negotiable revision slots. They should be completely free from distractions and treated as high-priority time.
- Silver Hours - These are more flexible and can be adjusted if needed, depending on your childs other commitments.
- Task Planning - It’s just as important to plan how your child revises as it is to plan what they revise. Please refer to the guidance we’ve provided to support this.
In addition to this, students will still be set their usual homework hours per subject via Arbor during term time. These tasks will be revision-focused.
🧠Encourage Active Recall
Support your child in using techniques like:
- Flashcards (especially using the Leitner method)
- Mind maps from memory
- Practice exam questions (open and closed book)
- Self-testing using knowledge organisers
Ask them to explain a topic to you - if they can teach it, they know it.
📚 Use the Subject Resources
Each subject section includes links to revision hubs, video playlists and online platforms like BBC Bitesize, Seneca, Tassomai and Cognito. These are excellent tools for independent learning and reinforcement.
Final Thoughts
Your encouragement and involvement can make a real difference. Even small actions, like helping plan a timetable, asking questions or checking in on progress can boost motivation and reduce stress.
The message we’re sharing with students is simple: “Preparation, not pressure.” With the right tools and support, they can approach their mocks with confidence.
